Young women in Mukuru celebrate Youth International Day with Zumba.

Young women in Mukuru slums, Nairobi County on Wednesday afternoon celebrated the Youth International day with Zumba dance at Ruben Center.

Dance choreographer Kelvin Kamuhia was in a jovial mood and appreciated the attendance.

“There are several reasons as to why we do this. For now it’s mostly a social way to get the community together, but moving forward Zumba is an amazing tool for fitness. I am happy to see these young women here this afternoon enjoying the dance,” the Physical education teacher at Ruben center said.

The Zumba dance organized by Salama Center brought together 30 young women from different areas of Mukuru slum. The forum also consisted of group discussions as the women engaged themselves in different topics affecting their day to day lives within the slum.

“I think I want to do this going forward. It’s an effective way of exercising your body. Here in these slums, it’s not safe for young women to go out early morning for jogging; also we don’t have social amenities for exercising. So this has been an eye opener,” said 26 year old Grace Njeri who resides in Mukuru slum.

As the world celebrates the Youth International Day, it has been globally noted with concern the socio-economic challenges affecting youth living in informal settlements.

Through Salama Center, youth in Mukuru can now come together through different forums in a bid to seek solutions to their problems.
