Cecilia Njeri, head of Ruben Center’s Maternity Unit has called upon pregnant women living in the slums of Mukuru to seek medical attention at Ruben Centre health facility.

Speaking exclusively to Ruben Fm’s Gumzo Mtaani Show on Sunday, the jubilant midwife was excited, but also exhausted.

“Since the doctors went on strike, government hospitals are nonfunctional except for Kenyatta National Hospital. Usually we deliver three to two babies a day, but from Friday to Sunday afternoon, we have delivered 13 beautiful babies,” said the smiling five foot inch specialist.

Ruben Centre has now seen the rise of patients coming from all over Embakasi Constituency since the doctors went on strike.

“I come from the Kwa Njenga area and only heard about this facility a while back. Initially I had nightmares while attending a government hospital. The overcrowding, the rude nurses and the poor treatment made me want to go back to my rural home so that I can be attended by my grandmother who is a traditional midwife, but thank God I found out this place,” quipped while blushing Janet Mungai who arrived at the Centre on Saturday mid-morning and delivered twins by late afternoon.

According to Cecilia, there are so many women who do not attend the regular monthly clinics and only discover their children at birth.

She goes ahead and explains that the facility offers a scan every Friday at a cost of one thousand Kenya shillings while the rest of the services are free, and strongly discourages giving birth at home.

Expectant mothers are encouraged to visit the center and also register for a Linda Mama number which will help them deliver at no cost.

Ruben Health Centre is a Level 3 medical facility that began as a tin shed in 1992, started by a Japanese NGO – African Education Fund.

After the Christian Brothers began administering the Centre in 2000, a permanent structure new clinic was built and officially opened in 2003.

Ruben Health Centre has a maternity unit that started in May 2018 following a feasibility study in the community. The maternity services rendered are FREE.
