Ruben Centre on Thursday afternoon celebrated their first ever Teachers Awards during a ceremony that was graced by the organization’s Director and also included other department heads.
Speaking at the event, head teacher Mrs Scolastica Opiyo was in a jovial mood and emphasized on the need to attract more donors for the purposes of scholarships.
“ I have been dreaming about this day for three years now, but finally we have made it happen. With whatever we have achieved, I would like to encourage my teachers to strive even higher because we can do it. Next KCPE we are now aiming for a mean score of 260 marks,” said Mrs Opiyo and also added that it is important that Mukuru community should have a mechanism to monitor students in their secondary education, as this will improve the quality of life.
Ruben Center’s Director Mr Nicholas Makau was a happy man on this debut, as his smiles could not be hidden even under the blue surgical mask.
“ I am so happy that we have made this happen as I pay tribute to former Director Mr Frank O’shea. These are his children and come next year when we meet here again I also want the next class who are my children to shine even brighter,” Makau said and promised more support from the organization in efforts to provide quality and better educational facilities for Mukuru community.
The AEF Ruben Primary School is a catholic school supported by the Christian brothers at Mukuru kwa Ruben, with a population of now 2922 boys and girls, inclusive of a Special school unit that caters for children with special needs.
This year, despite the challenges of Covid 19, the Mrs Opiyo led team managed to enroll 341 candidates for the just concluded KCPE exams and scored an amazing 250 mean grade.
Compared to 2018 where the students managed 239.38 mean score, they have been gradually improving as 2019 saw them score 242.17.
Seen as a cursed year that was terrible to parents, teachers and students, the year 2020 actually created some resilience. By scoring a mean grade of 250.17 marks, it is a dream come true to Mrs Opiyo and her team as they are now aiming to achieve 260 marks with the next candidates.
The school enrolled 341 candidates in the last exam, but two missed out. One had a double registration and opted to sit his exams in the other school as the other got pregnant, a challenge that is common within informal settlements.
This year, the confident Mrs Opiyo has enrolled 364 boys and girls who are holding her dreams for higher achievement and their own for a better life.
The award ceremony saw teachers being awarded with cash, certificates and other prizes.
In attendance was also board chairperson Mr Sunday Fadhili, Mrs Jane Kihiu who is now a teacher missionary and life skills coach and Ruben Fm manager Thomas Odhiambo among others.
