Manchester United is understood to have opened talks with Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and their city rivals right back Kieran Trippier.
Right after securing a 73 million pounds deal for Jadon Sancho, it is now believed that sometime next week the Old Trafford hierarchy might unveil a double swoop of the Laliga defenders.
United have wanted a long-term partner for center-back Harry Maguire after seeing their defensive frailties exposed without the England defender towards the end of the campaign.
Neither Victor Lindelof nor Eric Bailly have convinced that they can be Maguire’s permanent sidekick.
Both players were poor when Maguire had his season ended prematurely after suffering ankle ligament damage in United’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on May 9.
Real Madrid defender Varane is expected to fill that void and would likely cost around £50m, which would take another large chunk out of the club’s transfer budget after the big-money deal for Sancho.
Meanwhile, versatile full-back Trippier is believed to be close to arriving from Atletico Madrid to provide some welcomed competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.
English media has reported that deals for Varane and Trippier are in the final stages and could be completed next week.
