Belgium national team manager Roberto Martinez has revealed that Kevin De Bryune will not play this Saturday at home against a visiting Arteta’s Arsenal.
Speaking on Thursday to English media, Martinez also added that his parent club Manchester city needed to be careful with the ace as he has already dropped him from the upcoming international matches.
“Kevin is not available, as you know he had some minutes against Tottenham. But after that game he still felt some pain [in the ankle]. He’s taking a different route now. He’s not gonna be playing this weekend. The idea is to see how his injury progresses. It’s only right that we work together for the well-being of the player. Kevin is working really hard behind the scenes to get fully fit and to be ready for a demanding season. At the moment he’s not 100 per cent fit.” Martinez said.
De Bruyne has been struggling with an ankle injury he has failed to shake off since he suffered the problem during Euro 2020.
The problem ruled De Bruyne out City’s entire pre-season campaign, and while he came off the bench to play 11 minutes in City’s opening day defeat to spurs – his first piece of action since Belgium’s Euros run was ended at the start of July – he was left out of the matchday squad to face Norwich last weekend.
The 30-year-old went off injured against Portugal in Belgium’s last-16 victory this summer, but soldiered on to play the full 90 minutes in their following quarter-final loss against Italy.
The defending English premier League champions are currently at ninth place with only three points after losing their season’s opener away at Spurs.
Now Guardiola’s men will welcome a paltry, rather sickly and emotional Arsenal as they seek to earn at least a point after losing their first two matches.
