The claim that cooking flour prices have dropped from Ksh230 to Ksh160 is false and misleading.
The claim was shared on Twitter by John Gichengo on 25th November 2022.
There has been a steady increase in the prices of commodities within the country owing to the rise in inflation rates among other factors. Cooking flour is among the commodities whose prices have skyrocketed. With various subsidies coming to an end in Kenya, the current inflation rate is at 9.6% as per a Central Bank of Kenya report.
Ruben FM conducted a fact check on the claim to verify its authenticity.
According to Business Daily, the price of a 2 Kg packet of flour is set to rise due to the increase in the price of maize. They stated that maize prices have hit a historic high with a 90 Kg bag now retailing at Ksh6,000 in Nairobi. This is likely to cause hard times for consumers who will incur the high cost of flour.
According to the weekly price check by Tuko, the government laid measures, including the fertilizer subsidy, to improve maize production in the country. Despite this, the price of flour has remained high and a 2 Kg packet of flour is currently retailing at Ksh210.
Therefore, the claim that the price of a 2 kg packet of cooking flour has been reduced by Ksh70 to retail at Ksh160 is false and misleading.
