Mukuru Community Dialogue on relationshiop between Police and Residents

Today, Ruben FM, in collaboration with the Mukuru Justice Centre, hosted a vibrant community talk focusing on key issues affecting residents of Mukuru, including security, criminal case reporting, and arbitrary arrests. The event brought together community members, local leaders, law enforcement officers, and a representative from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA),the national agency mandated to oversee police conduct. The main aim was to strengthen trust, improve communication, and promote accountability between the police and the public, especially within the Mukuru community.

During the session, several residents expressed deep concern about the use of excessive force by police officers during arrests and patrols. They shared personal experiences and stories of intimidation and harassment, urging for more humane and respectful approaches in handling suspects. These testimonies painted a clear picture of the daily struggles faced by ordinary citizens in their pursuit of justice and safety within their neighborhoods, calling for a more responsive and community-friendly policing system.

The Mukuru Justice Centre team, led by Mr. Toure, emphasized the importance of civic education and awareness on human rights, particularly regarding how to report crimes or unlawful arrests. Mr. Toure highlighted that informed citizens are empowered citizens, urging the community to use the proper legal channels and to document any incidents of abuse or misconduct by law enforcement officers. The Justice Centre also reaffirmed its commitment to partner with Ruben FM and institutions like IPOA to promote justice, fairness, and accountability through continued community engagements and radio awareness programs.

Speaking during the event, Deputy OCS Mr. Fisher acknowledged the concerns raised by the residents and urged the community to adopt a positive mindset towards the police. He stressed that effective security depends on cooperation and mutual respect between law enforcement officers and the public. Mr. Fisher further assured participants that his office is open to dialogue and will continue working closely with community representatives, IPOA, and the Mukuru Justice Centre to address cases of misconduct and rebuild public confidence in the police service.

The event concluded with a shared commitment to build peaceful coexistence and restore trust between the community and the police. Ruben FM pledged to continue providing a platform for open dialogue, awareness creation, and reporting on justice issues affecting Mukuru residents. Participants left the meeting encouraged and hopeful that collaboration, transparency, and continuous engagement will pave the way for a safer and more just community.
