POLICE GENDER DESK OFFICERS AND SGBV CHAMPIONS ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS

Today at the Mukuru Community Justice Centre in Mukuru, Nairobi, the Police Gender Desk and Community Champions convened a powerful roundtable discussion to address the state of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in our community.
The meeting reviewed reported cases: 91 cases in 2025 and 14 cases so far in 2026. While the numbers appear lower this year, stakeholders expressed concern that this may reflect fear, intimidation, and underreporting rather than a true reduction in incidents.
The discussion confronted harsh realities. Some community members remain silent or cover up cases until they become extreme. In certain situations, parents and family members protect perpetrators especially where financial interests are involved. Participants also highlighted concerns about religious leaders misusing community trust and the increasing challenge of digital anonymity, where technology enables hidden exploitation, particularly involving minors.
Institutional barriers were openly discussed. Allegations of corruption, insensitivity, and mishandling of statements continue to weaken trust in justice systems. Hospitals were cited for complex procedures and policy barriers that limit survivors’ access to timely care. Concerns were raised regarding P3 documentation processes and possible medical cover-ups. Additionally, delays in emergency response and safety concerns within some safe houses were identified as serious protection gaps.
Despite these challenges, the collaboration between the Police Gender Desk and Community Champions was recognized as strong and improving. However, significant gaps remain between local champions, hospitals, and some parents.
The roundtable concluded with a commitment to strengthen coordination, improve survivor-centered services, and ensure that chiefs and medical professionals are included in the next stakeholder meeting.
Ending SGBV demands courage, accountability, and collective action. Silence protects perpetrators but unity protects our community.
