Matiang’i: The Police are doing an excellent job in enforcing lockdown

Cabinet Secretary for the ministry of interior and coordination of national security has praised police officers for their efforts in enforcing the curfew rules as the country still battles the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking during an interview with a local Tv station, Matiang’i on Saturday night was unapologetic.

“The Kenyan police force has done an excellent job to ensure that there is law and order at this particular time. As we all know, Kenyans are stubborn and without the police, then the corona virus now in Kenya would be in millions,” said the tough talking minister who also urged Kenyans to be law abiding.

As per 5th July, Police in Kenya had reportedly been involved in the killing of 15 people since the government had imposed in March, a dusk-to-dawn curfew as part of a series of sweeping measures to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The Independent Policing Oversight Body (IPOA) had earlier said that it had received 87 complaints against police since the curfew and heightened security measures were rolled out on March 27.

The complaints included deaths, shootings, harassment, assaults, robbery, inhuman treatment and sexual assault.

The tough talking Cabinet Secretary who took office in 2017 might be a government defender, but also what he has failed to understand is the fact that governments are there to protect the interests of their citizens in humane ways, without violating their rights.

His latest remarks are now a subject of scrutiny from many human rights activists and Kenyan citizens at large.
