International Youth Day 2025

On International Youth Day, the world paused to celebrate the determination, creativity, and leadership of young people everywhere. This year’s global theme – “Local Youth Action for the SDGs and Beyond” – carried a powerful reminder: lasting global change begins at the grassroots level, in communities where youth are stepping forward to lead.

From rural villages to bustling cities, young people are shaping the future. They are designing innovative solutions for sustainable development, building inclusive communities, standing at the frontlines of peacebuilding, and demanding a fairer, greener, and more just world. They are not simply participants in the conversation they are bold innovators, resilient organizers, and essential partners in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Here in Mukuru, the Salama Youth Hub proudly joined this global chorus of action, ensuring that it was neither forgotten nor left behind. Determined to mark the day in a way that speaks to the unique challenges and successes of local youth, the hub placed its celebrations around a dual focus: celebrating youth achievements and advocating for youth mental wellness. This was the core theme of the day recognizing the resilience, talents, and contributions of young people while also prioritizing their emotional and psychological well-being.

The day’s program brought together an impressive mix of activities, creating a space where knowledge, creativity, and shared experiences could flourish. Individual and roundtable discussions formed the heart of the celebration, allowing young people to openly share their thoughts, personal stories, and challenges surrounding mental health. These conversations were guided and enriched by local mental health experts, who offered practical advice, coping strategies, and information on available support services.

In between discussions, the air was filled with energy and inspiration as various artistes took the stage poets, musicians, dancers, and other performers each using their talent to shine a light on mental wellness, youth empowerment, and the resilience of the community. The performances were not just entertainment; they were powerful expressions of hope, healing, and unity. Volunteers moved from group to group, engaging participants in one-on-one conversations, ensuring no one left without the tools and contacts they might need.

The celebration was more than just an event it was a statement. It showed that in Mukuru, young people understand the power of taking action at the local level. It reflected a broader truth: when youth lead, societies thrive. And on this International Youth Day, the Salama Youth Hub proved that the voices, ideas, and leadership of young people can shape a healthier, more peaceful, and more sustainable future starting right here, at home.
