Admin Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has been reported to have tackled his own player during a training session earlier on Tuesday, an injury that might sideline the midfielder for up to 12 weeks.
Speaking to The Telegraph on Tuesday, the Derby County manager made it clear that it was accidental, but avoided the fact that it was his fault.
“Jason will be out for eight to 12 weeks,” Rooney said, without admitting he was responsible.
“He has rocked his ankle. Thankfully he doesn’t need surgery, but needs the time to make sure he gets his ankle strong again,” said Rooney when asked about it.
Knight was absent for Derby’s pre-season friendly defeat to Salford City last weekend and Rooney is scrambling to assemble a squad in time for Huddersfield’s visit to Pride Park Stadium in the 2021/22 Championship season’s opening weekend.
The Rams boss is said to have hurt Jason Knight’s ankle in a ’50-50 tackle’ on the training pitch, which has left the 20-year-old Irishman facing up to 12 weeks on the sidelines.
They avoided relegation to League one by a point last season but their preparations for the upcoming campaign have been eventful with financial problems and an EFL embargo meaning they have just nine registered senior players, two of those goalkeepers.
And now it’s reported that the Derby boss has shot themselves in the foot, with the English media claiming tha Wayne Rooney is now another player down after injuring Knight himself in a training session.
