WORLD RADIO DAY 2026

Theme: Radio and Artificial Intelligence in Amplifying SGBV Response and Good Governance

World Radio Day 2026 was marked under the global theme “Radio and Artificial Intelligence,” highlighting how technology and community broadcasting can work together to amplify voices, promote accountability, and protect vulnerable populations. In Mukuru informal settlements, radio continues to play a critical role in addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), promoting good governance, and empowering residents with timely, reliable information.

Through the integration of Artificial Intelligence tools, radio stations like Ruben FM are now able to better track listener feedback, analyze community concerns, and identify trends in SGBV reporting. AI-supported systems help monitor incoming calls, SMS, and WhatsApp messages, enabling faster response and more informed programming. This has strengthened the connection between the community and service providers, ensuring survivors receive accurate information on reporting mechanisms, legal support, and protection services. Radio remains a safe and trusted platform where survivors and community members can speak out, learn their rights, and hold leaders accountable.

The impact of radio in Mukuru goes beyond information sharing. It has helped raise awareness on governance issues such as access to clean water, electricity, health services, and safety. Through talk shows, live discussions, and community dialogues, residents are empowered to question leadership, demand transparency, and participate in decision-making processes that affect their daily lives.

As part of today’s World Radio Day celebrations, Safaricom, through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, partnered with Ruben FM and community leaders to support vulnerable families in Mukuru through a food donation exercise. The initiative aimed to ease the burden on families facing economic hardship while reinforcing the importance of partnerships between corporate organizations and community media.

Residents expressed gratitude for both the material support and the continued role of radio in amplifying their voices. The food donation not only addressed immediate needs but also symbolized the power of collaboration between radio, technology, and corporate partners in building resilient communities.

As the world celebrates World Radio Day, Mukuru stands as a testament to the enduring power of radio now strengthened by Artificial Intelligence to inform, empower, protect, and transform lives. Radio remains not just a source of information, but a lifeline for justice, accountability, and hope.
