False: Chief Justice Martha Koome and Inspector-General of Police Japhet Koome are not related

There has been a claim making rounds on social media that the Kenyan Chief Justice Martha Koome is related to the newly sworn-in Inspector-General of Police Japeth Koome.

 

On October 11th 2022, Japhet Koome was sworn in as the Inspector General of Police after being nominated and vetted by Parliament. He shares a similar surname – Koome with the Chief Justice Martha Koome. This similarity has sparked debate among Kenyans that the two of them share a relation. With some Kenyans claiming that the Inspector General of Police is the Chief Justice’s brother.

 

 

Ruben FM looked into this claim to ascertain its validity.

 

The newly appointed Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome addressed this claim that has been making rounds on social media. According to a video posted by KBC , the IG dismissed the claim that he has a blood relation with the Chief Justice. He explains that he and the chief Justice’s husband Koome Kiragu share the same second name.

 

The Chief Justice went  ahead to explain that among the Meru community the name Koome is a name loved by many people, she goes on to further liken it to other well loved names from other communities in Kenya such as Wafula, Anyango, Onyango, Kamau and Mohammed.

 

Based on our findings, the claim that the Chief Justice Martha Koome and the Inspector General Japhet Koome are related is false and misleading .
