Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has assured thousands of Nairobi Youths under the ‘Kazi Mitaani’ program that he will make sure they get their delayed payments.

Speaking on Thursday morning at Ruben Fm, the Nairobi governor was confident.

“Don’t worry; I have been working day in day out to make sure that our youths are paid. I am well aware that they have not been paid for three months. I am just waiting for a new speaker and then get things rolling, so worry not,” Sonko assured the public, adding that Nairobi residents should be kind enough to forgive him when he asks to.

The National Hygiene Programme (NHP), dubbed Kazi Mtaani, an initiative started by the government was aimed at targeting over 50 thousand unemployed youth in Nairobi.

The program, which is spearheaded by the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, is geared at integrating jobless Kenyans in urban hygiene and sanitation works across 23 informal settlements.

However, the program also came with its challenges as cases of corruption also took center stage. Since wrangles at City hall started, it’s now three months without pay for young men and women who had the project as a source of livelihood.

On Tuesday, Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga urged Kazi Mtaani youths who have not received their pay to contact County Implementation Committees.

In a statement, Hinga said some workers’ details may have had errors which resulted in their payments not going through. He assured that County Implementation Committees will capture their details including name, identification number and phone number, which will be verified against returns from the paying agency and legitimate claims will thereafter be processed for immediate payment.

Now Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has given hope to the youth, but the big question still remains to be ,are these mere words or will there be action later?
