FALSE: This picture does not show President William Ruto and Raila Odinga shaking hands in Egypt

The claims that this picture depicts President William Ruto and Raila Odinga in Egypt are false and misleading.

 

Kenyan President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga were in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt for the 27th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP27). Odinga was invited to address the meeting in his capacity as the African Union High Rep. for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

 

There have been claims on Facebook that the picture attached below shows President Ruto and Odinga shaking hands in Egypt during COP27.

 

Osborn Ambani wrote on his Facebook page “It’s not that serious guys. Raila and Ruto meet, shake hands in Egypt”.

 

 

 

Ruben FM did its investigation to determine the authenticity of this post. We determined the origin of the picture by performing a Google reverse image search which led us to this Standard Digital article. According to the Standard Digital article, the image was taken in Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi, Kenya during the Jamhuri Day event in 2019.

 

 

 

This image has also been used by Nation Africa and Business Daily Africa.

 

Therefore, the claim that the photo was taken in Egypt during COP27 is false and misleading.
