Ruben FM’s 7th Annual Football Tournament 2024

The 7th annual Ruben FM Football Tournament concluded on October 6th, 2024, with a thrilling grand finale at Ruben Grounds. The two-month-long competition featured 40 teams, including 32 men’s and 8 women’s teams, battling it out on the pitch.

Tournament Highlights:

  • Community Support: The tournament was supported by numerous organizations, including SAFARICOM, African Population and Health Research Centre, Africa Youth Trust, South Field Mall, Habitat for Humanity Kenya, Action AID, Kenya Red Cross, and Football Kenya Federation. These organizations provided financial backing, resources, and volunteer support, contributing to the tournament’s success.

  • Women’s Finale: The St. Joseph Ladies emerged victorious in the women’s final, defeating Desert Venom in a penalty shootout. The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams displaying impressive skill and determination.

  • Men’s Finale: Wilson Aviators FC from Kibera claimed the men’s championship, defeating FC Creative Hands in a thrilling match that went to extra time and penalties. The atmosphere was electric, with over 7,000 fans in attendance and hundreds of thousands more listening to the live broadcast on Ruben FM.

  • Large Crowd: The grand finale attracted a massive crowd of over 7,000 spectators, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. The enthusiastic support from the fans helped to elevate the excitement and intensity of the matches.

The top four teams in both the men’s and women’s categories received generous prizes, including cash rewards, jerseys, balls, medals, and trophies. The winners of each category received KSH 100,000 (men) and KSH 40,000 (women), respectively. These prizes were a testament to the hard work and dedication of the participating teams.

Beyond the competitive aspect of the tournament, Ruben FM used the event as a platform for community engagement and advocacy. The tournament’s themes focused on key social issues, such as child safeguarding, governance, human rights, gender-based violence, drug and substance abuse, mental health, sanitation, and economic empowerment. By incorporating these themes into the tournament, Ruben FM aimed to raise awareness and promote positive change within the Mukuru community.

To enhance the educational aspect of the tournament, Ruben FM invited experts and stakeholders to participate in live commentary and broadcasts.
